Schoolcraft at a glance
Schoolcraft is a village of 1,466 (2020) about 13 miles south of Kalamazoo on U.S. 131, known for its annual Fourth of July celebration.
What that means for your roof
Schoolcraft sits on open prairie surrounded by farmland, so homes and farm buildings face strong wind with little shelter. After storms, check ridge caps, edges and barn roofs; see storm and wind damage.
Farm buildings
Barns and machine sheds often have metal roofs whose fasteners and seals need checking as they age.
Kalamazoo County's first town
Euro-American settlement here dates to 1828, when Bazel Harrison moved his family from Ohio to Prairie Ronde, becoming the first settler in what would be Kalamazoo County. Surveyor Lucius Lyon laid out the village in 1831 and named it for his friend Henry Schoolcraft; it was recorded on October 5, 1831, as the county's first town. Some of the oldest homes in the county stand here, and older roofs on them deserve gentle, careful repair.
