Lake-effect snow and late storms
Kalamazoo has a humid continental climate with lake-effect snowstorms in winter, and it is known for heavy snow even in early April. Snow sitting on a roof, melting by day and refreezing at night, builds ice along the eaves that can push water under shingles. Good attic insulation and ventilation are the long-term fix; see ice dams.
Tornadoes are rare, but real
Tornadoes are uncommon here, but a major one tore through downtown Kalamazoo in 1980, and a high-end EF2 struck Portage on May 7, 2024, damaging more than 500 buildings. Severe thunderstorms with strong wind and hail are more common. After any big storm, look at your roof from the ground and see storm and wind damage.
