Otsego is a city of 4,120 (2020) in Allegan County on M-89, about three miles west of Plainwell and seventeen miles north of Kalamazoo. The Kalamazoo River flows east to west through the city.

Pine Creek to Otsego

The Samuel Foster family from Vermont settled here in the fall of 1831, and the first settlers called the place Pine Creek. A post office opened in 1832, and in 1835 the name changed to Otsego, after Otsego Lake in New York. A school followed in 1833, and the Tompkins House hotel in the 1860s.
