Plainwell is nicknamed the Island City for the power canal that cuts through it. The area was settled in the 1830s on the stagecoach route between Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids, later followed by the Grand Rapids and Indiana Railroad and U.S. 131. When a four-lane U.S. 131 was built west of town in the 1960s, Plainwell became a bedroom community for both cities.
