Portage at a glance
Portage is a city of 48,891 (2020) just south of Kalamazoo, the smaller of the two main cities in the Kalamazoo-Portage metro. It covers about 35 square miles, with Austin Lake in its southeast corner.
What that means for your roof
Portage was settled in 1830 but became a city only in 1963, and much of its housing dates from the decades since. Many homes are now on their second roof, or due for one. If yours is showing its age, see roof replacement.
Lakes and trees
Homes around Austin Lake and the city's other lakes and wooded lots deal with leaves, needles and shade that keep roofs damp. Clean gutters and valleys each fall.
The 2024 tornado
On May 7, 2024, a high-end EF2 tornado struck Portage. More than 500 buildings were damaged and 60 destroyed, and part of the roof of a FedEx distribution centre collapsed. Many homes nearby had repairs or new roofs afterward. If your roof was patched quickly after the storm, a follow-up inspection can confirm the work is holding.
